OUR ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES


The University Center for Academic and Workforce Development (UCAVM) serves as the vehicle for consolidating the University's many critical functions and activities relating to academic preparedness, college transition and workforce development. The Center's role and responsibilities involve the following:

  • Coordinate the operation and activities of the Educational Opportunity Centers, Bridge, and other program initiatives by providing a comprehensive statewide system of adult education and employment resources for economically and academically under-served populations;
  • Help build the capacity of these programs to participate fully in efforts to improve the academic preparedness of youth at risk, and workforce development activities of local communities;
  • Coordinate programs designed to strengthen workforce development assistance to local businesses, and employers;
  • Disseminate vital knowledge and resources regarding critical economic development issues within the state;
  • Collaborate with employers, state and community agencies to provide programs that will maximize opportunities for economically disadvantaged populations to acquire skills required for participation in productive work in New York State;
  • Gather, review, analyze and disseminate data and information regarding the academic preparedness of high school students, nontraditional students and returning adults;
  • Assess the status and effectiveness of remedial education programs and related activities within the State University of New York and its component institutions;
  • Develop recommendations on sector-sensitive policies on remediation and college transition particularly related to admission standards and requirements, where remediation should occur, how much and for how long, limits and guidelines, academic preparedness and the like;
  • Design, develop, prototype, implement and conduct remediation, college transition/school collaborations and school-to-work programs;
  • Encourage and develop partnerships with college campuses, state and local agencies throughout the state;
  • Obtain external funding to support academic preparedness initiatives and programs;
  • Represent the Provost's Office at local, state and national meetings.
  • Plan and conduct conferences and workshops on issues related to college preparedness, college transition, remediation, school/ college collaboration, school-to-work and workforce development;
